The
comparative form of the adjective is used to build the comparative superiority.
There are 3
different ways to build the comparative degree in English depending on the
adjective:
Adding
"-er" to the adjective
Preposing
the "more" particle to the adjective
With an
irregular shape

It consists
of adding to the adjective the suffix "-er":

It applies to:
Monosyllabic adjectives
Adjectives with 2 syllables ending in
"-er", "-le", "-ow", "-y"
It is important to keep these points in mind:
- Bending of consonant
Within the group of adjectives that form the
comparative by adding "-er" there are some that double the final
consonant.
The rule is: doubles the final consonant if
adjective has,
a syllable
it ends in a single consonant
and this is preceded by a single vowel
big (big) ➜
bigger (bigger)
hot (hot) ➜
hotter (hotter)
- Adjectives ending in a consonant +
"and"
If an adjective ends in "and" preceded by
a consonant, its comparative is formed with the rule: y ➜ ier
funny (fun) ➜
funnier (more fun)
If the adjective is not preceded by a consonant,
its comparative form on a regular basis:
gray (gray) ➜
grayer (more gray)
- Adjectives ending in "-e"
If an adjective ends in "-e" only an
"-r" is added
nice (nice) ➜
nicer (more pleasant)

It consists in putting the particle before the
adjective.
