2.Comparative degree (comparative)
The comparative form of the adjective is used to build the comparative superiority.
There are 3 different ways to build the comparative degree in English depending on the adjective:
Adding "-er" to the adjective
Preposing the "more" particle to the adjective
With an irregular shape
Adjective form + "-er"
It consists of adding to the adjective the suffix "-er":
positive degree comparative degree
old
(old) olderb (older)

Monosyllabic adjectives
Adjectives with 2 syllables ending in "-er", "-le", "-ow", "-y"
It is important to keep these points in mind:

- Bending of consonant
Within the group of adjectives that form the comparative by adding "-er" there are some that double the final consonant.

The rule is: doubles the final consonant if adjective has,

a syllable
it ends in a single consonant
and this is preceded by a single vowel
big (big)

bigger (bigger)

hot (hot)
hotter (hotter)

- Adjectives ending in a consonant + "and"
If an adjective ends in "and" preceded by a consonant, its comparative is formed with the rule: y ier

funnier (more fun)

If the adjective is not preceded by a consonant, its comparative form on a regular basis:

gray (gray)

grayer (more gray)

- Adjectives ending in "-e"
If an adjective ends in "-e" only an "-r" is added

nice (nice)

nicer (more pleasant)

Preposing "most" to the adjective

The rules of application of one or another form of the superlative, of the bending of consonants, etc. coincide with those of the comparative.
